Many New Zealanders deal with professionals. That means that they rely on the expertise of that professional in the advice or assistance that is given. There are many professions. As some common examples, it might be medical advice and assistance or accounting, legal, dental, architectural or engineering advice and assistance.
Each profession has its standards and each person in that profession must meet those standards.
Some professions have their standards spelt out in detailed Codes, such as the Code for Professional Conduct of Barristers and Solicitors. Furthermore, the laws of negligence (see topic "Professional Negligence") require that as well as meeting the standards required by the profession itself, the law requires that professionals meet the standards considered appropriate by peers. That will involve an inquiry into the behaviour of the professional and whether others in that profession consider there has been adequate professional advice and assistance or there has been negligence.
Some Southern Cross Chambers members have extensive experience in the fields of professional discipline. Two of its members are prosecuting panellists for the Auckland District Law Society. Its members have represented claimants who claim breach of standards and have represented professionals against whom such claims have been made. Members have represented claimants against other professionals who are covered by professional indemnity insurance and have had dispute resolution processes for pursuing those claims and having them resolved. Members have represented those who face disciplinary investigations and prosecution before professional bodies.
