Intellectual property primarily addresses rights in property of an "intellectual" kind rather than other property (such as land and buildings). There can be property rights in trademarks. There can be copyrights in original documents, compositions, designs and the like. There can be patent rights for a registered patent. There can be rights which prevent the passing off of one person's goods as those of another so as to benefit from the reputation of that other. There can be infringement of property rights in relation to confidential information.
These rights canvass all aspects of New Zealand trade practise including print, electronic and the media.
Members at Southern Cross Chambers can assist with advice on the formation and protection of these rights and can assist in processes for prevention of abuse of these rights such as injunctive relief or for damages and recovery of information and damages for breach of intellectual property rights.
